Clothing according to the sunna
Question
Question: Zayd says that a kurta (long shirt) reaching to mid-shin and trousers with narrow leg openings are not established from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and therefore this is bid‘a (innovation in religion). He also said that the righteous predecessors (al-salaf al-salihun) adopted this kind of clothing in order to distinguish between belonging to Islam and belonging to the kuffar. Is Zayd’s statement correct or not?
Answer
A kurta reaching to mid-shin is established by the noble hadith, and the righteous adopted it. Wearing trousers was not a general custom among the Arabs; rather, the custom was the waist-cloth, and it too reached to mid-shin; this is also stated explicitly in the noble hadith. Lower than mid-shin is also permitted, but (the garment) should remain above the ankles.
