The use of wine by a sick person
Question
Question: If a person is ill and wine gives him temporary or permanent cure, then the patient is obliged to use wine (this was said by the imam at the Friday prayer). The questioner wishes to know: which of these four haram things — wine, swine, fornication (zina) and usury (riba) — is permissible, and in what circumstances? Or is it better to die than to use any one of these haram things?
Answer
Committing fornication (zina) is not permissible; rather, it is haram: [ar]وَلَا تَقْرَبُوا۟ ٱلزِّنَىٰٓ[/ar] “And do not approach fornication” (the verse; Surah al-Isra’, 17:32). Taking usury (riba) is likewise not permissible; rather, it is haram: [ar]وَحَرَّمَ ٱلرِّبَوٰا۟[/ar] “…and He has forbidden usury” (Surah al-Baqara, 2:275).
