The ruling on wine for a patient
Question
Question: ‘Amr is close to death, and a physician (practitioner of traditional medicine) or a doctor has said that if he is given wine to drink, perhaps his life will be saved. What is the Shari‘a ruling on doing so at such a time? And ‘Amr says: “I will die, but I will not drink wine.” What about his saying this and dying?
Answer
In this situation, where even the physician or the doctor has no certainty of a cure despite the wine being drunk, it is not proper to drink wine merely on their saying that perhaps life will be saved. ‘Amr’s refusal is correct.
