Wine for treatment, and the way to forgiveness for drinking wine without excuse

Question

Drinking wine is haram according to the Shari‘a. If, for some reasonable cause or for the purpose of restoring health, some doctor advises drinking wine, will the prohibition still remain? If someone drinks wine by mistake or by being drawn in by his companions, is there no way to forgiveness? If there is, what is it? We are soldiers; we are given wine free of charge, and everyone drinks it, but they give as the reason for drinking that a large quantity of Dalda (vegetable cooking fat)

Answer

Drinking wine is haram and incurs a curse. Whether it is wine received free of charge or (drunk) for the sake of companions, it is by no means permissible; it is a major sin (kabira). If the law of the Shari‘a were in force, lashes would be administered.
