A Muslim midwife going to the homes of non-Muslims
Question
In a certain village there is a Muslim woman who is a midwife. Both communities, Muslim and non-Muslim, live in the village, and among the non-Muslims there are also four Bhangis (a caste of sweepers and scavengers). Until now the midwife has gone to everyone except the non-Muslim Bhangis and Harijans (the name given to the “untouchable” castes). The Harijans and Bhangis insist: since the midwife belongs to the whole village, why does she not come to us? They want to submit a petition against her to the government.
Answer
If she goes to the Harijans too and performs her service, there is no sin in that either; rather, if she deals (with them) with Islamic character and magnanimity, then, in sha’ Allah, it will make a good impression.
