American ghee

Question

Question: Food and drink are given free to poor countries from the American aid fund, and among them is ghee (clarified butter) whose colour is unusual. I have heard from some people that it is made from pig fat; those in charge say: no, this is ghee from domestic cows, and the difference in colour is due to the change of climate. The seal on it does not reveal anything either. So what is the ruling of the Shari‘a on using it?

Answer

As long as its being impure (najis) and haram is not established by Shari‘a proofs, a fatwa of prohibition cannot be given on it. Yes, if someone harbours doubt in his heart and for that reason does not use this ghee, there is no harm in that: [ar]«دَعْ مَا يَرِيبُكَ إِلَى مَا لَا يَرِيبُكَ» (الحديث)[/ar] “Leave what makes you doubt for what does not make you doubt” (hadith).
