Collecting Contributions for a Khatm
Question
On the joyous occasion of a khatm (completion of the Qur’an), collecting money “in the name of Allah”, having forty kilograms of sweets prepared with it, arranging illumination and decorations for it, and specially inviting non-Muslims — is all this permissible in our religion, or is only the distribution of sweets permissible?
Answer
In collecting contributions for sweets on the occasion of a khatm of the Holy Qur’an the limits are generally not observed: it is regarded as obligatory, pressure is applied in collecting, people are shamed — that so-and-so gave too little — there is boasting, and some men give under compulsion after taking a loan. Because of these evils it is forbidden.
