Khatm in a Particular Manner, Feeding in the Mosque and Scrambling for Food
Question
Here, under the name of “shrine bhandara” (a public feast held at a shrine), a sadaqa is customarily arranged: flour, rice or cash is collected and food is cooked; then the khatm of Shaykh Jilani, Khatm-e Khwajagan (a Naqshbandi gathering for reciting set adhkar and du‘as), the khatm of Sultan al-‘Arifin and the like are performed; merely for form’s sake a Qur’anic verse is recited as well; then cries such as “Hazrat so-and-so, al-madad (help)!
Answer
This form and this function are not established by the Holy Qur’an, the noble Hadith, the reports of the noble Companions ﵃ or the fiqh of the mujtahid imams. It should be stopped with wise management, gentleness and compassion. It is contrary to the reverence due to the graveyard, contrary to the reverence due to the mosque, and contrary to the reverence due to the imams.
