Collective Qur’an Recitation at the Sacred Rawda and the Graves of the Companions

Question

Is a collective Qur’an recitation for the deceased held at the grave of the Most Sacred Prophet ﷺ and at the graves of the noble Companions ﵃ as well, or not — as in India people have the Qur’an recited for payment in houses and at graves? In such a case do the reciter and the soul of the deceased receive any reward or not?

Answer

This practice is prohibited and impermissible. Taking payment for a Qur’an recitation for the purpose of isal al-thawab (conveying reward to the deceased) is a sin, and giving it is a sin too, and no reward is obtained thereby (“Radd al-Muhtar”, vol. 5). In the earliest generations (qurun ula) this was not the practice.
