Fixing a Date for Isal al-Thawab
Question
What is the Shari‘a basis of fatiha? What is the ruling on reciting fatiha over food placed before oneself, on holding the third-day memorial gathering, the tenth day and the fortieth day; on having the kalima recited over chickpeas only on the third day [after death]; on common people and the elite eating that food and feeding it to others? Also: cooking halwa (a sweet dish of semolina or flour cooked in ghee)
Answer
Isal al-thawab (conveying reward to the deceased) — by giving the poor food, clothing and other necessities, by performing prayer, reciting the Holy Qur’an and tasbih, by fasting, by performing hajj, in short by any good deed, whenever one has the ability — is correct and beneficial.
