Travelling to Visit Graves

Question

Apart from Masjid al-Aqsa, Masjid al-Haram and the Prophet’s Mosque ﷺ, is it sunna or permissible to travel, with the intention of reward, to the shrine of some saintly person? Did the Rightly-Guided Caliphs, or any Companion, Tabi‘i or Taba‘ Tabi‘i, place a sheet of flowers on the Prophet’s ﷺ pure Rawda (grave), or offer bottles of perfume and the like, as people nowadays offer at most of the shrines of Ajmer, Kaliyar and Delhi? Did any Companion, Tabi‘i or Taba‘ Tabi‘i in the three generations make a vow (nadhr)

Answer

Concerning travelling in order to visit graves there is a difference of opinion; from the words of Imam al-Ghazali a preference for permissibility is understood. [ar]وَهَكَذَا يُفْهَمُ مِنْ عِبَارَةِ الشَّامِيِّ فِي رَدِّ الْمُحْتَارِ[/ar] “And likewise it is understood from the wording of al-Shami in ‘Radd al-Muhtar’.
