Singular or Plural Forms in Speaking of Allah
Question
Allah the Exalted is One, so [in Urdu] one says of Allah the Exalted, in the singular, “He does”, “He gives”, “He takes”. Yet nowadays, in “Tablighi Nisab” (“The Tabligh Curriculum”) and the like, and in speeches, you people say and write [the verbs] in the plural form. What is the reason for this?
Answer
For the sake of veneration it is also correct [in Urdu] to use “tum” (the Urdu plural ‘you’) and “aap” (the respectful ‘you’) [that is, the plural forms of address]. Allah the Pure Himself said: [ar]إِنَّآ أَعْطَيْنَـٰكَ ٱلْكَوْثَرَ[/ar] “Indeed, We have given you al-Kawthar” (Surah al-Kawthar, 108:1)
