The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “The lawful is clear and the unlawful is clear, and between them are doubtful matters that many people do not know. Whoever guards against the doubtful matters protects his religion and his honor.”

Ethanol (ethyl alcohol) — is it halal?

Ruling: Mashbuh (doubtful)

Description

Ethyl alcohol (ethanol) is an ingredient, a solvent and carrier for flavourings, an extraction solvent and a raw material for vinegar. Food alcohol is made by fermenting sugars and starch: cereals, potatoes, beet, molasses, raw sugar; there is also alcohol of vine origin and alcohol from whey. Ethanol is also made from ethylene; per 1988 US data some synthetic ethanol went to vinegar and drugs.

Basis of the ruling

Ethyl alcohol is produced by fermenting sugars and starch — from grain, potatoes, beet, molasses, raw sugar, and also from milk whey; there is also alcohol of grape origin, including from distilled raisins. Ethanol is also made synthetically from ethylene. Alcohol from grapes is khamr and is haram.
