The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “The lawful is clear and the unlawful is clear, and between them are doubtful matters that many people do not know. Whoever guards against the doubtful matters protects his religion and his honor.”

Citrus (orange, lemon, lime, grapefruit) — is it halal?

Ruling: Mashbuh (doubtful)

Description

Citrus fruit (orange, mandarin, lemon, lime, grapefruit), their juices, concentrates and zest. The fruit itself is plant-based. The peel of fresh citrus may be coated with wax, shellac E904, E471, etc. — this concerns the zest. Gelatine, among others, is allowed for juice clarification; reconstituted juices get back their aroma, which may be extracted with food-grade alcohol.

Basis of the ruling

Orange, lemon, lime and grapefruit are plant-based. The fruit peel is coated with wax and shellac E904 (an insect secretion that retains particles of the insect itself) and with emulsifiers based on fatty acids of unknown origin; on loose fruit this is not always visible.
