The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “The lawful is clear and the unlawful is clear, and between them are doubtful matters that many people do not know. Whoever guards against the doubtful matters protects his religion and his honor.”

Tea — is it halal?

Ruling: Mashbuh (doubtful)

Description

Tea of all kinds — black, green, white, oolong, pu-erh, matcha — and tea extracts. The tea itself is plant-based. In the EU Group I emulsifiers including E471 are allowed in flavoured and instant tea, not in unflavoured leaf tea. Decaffeinated tea is made with solvents that are usually not listed in the ingredients.

Basis of the ruling

Tea — the leaves of the tea plant — is plant-based. The caffeine is removed with solvents, including ethanol whose source is not stated. The finished product does not show whether this was used, so such a product is doubtful (mushbooh) because of the possibility of haram.
