The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “The lawful is clear and the unlawful is clear, and between them are doubtful matters that many people do not know. Whoever guards against the doubtful matters protects his religion and his honor.”

E122 Azorubine, Carmoisine — is it halal?

Ruling: Halal

Description

Azorubine, Carmoisine is a synthetic monoazo dye: sodium naphthionate → diazotisation → coupling with sodium 1-naphthol-4-sulphonate → isolation of the sodium salt; per the Hilton-Davis patent — carbon on the naphthionate solution before diazotisation, ultrafiltration after coupling. The sources name no animal raw material in the synthesis.

Basis of the ruling

Azorubine (carmoisine) is a synthetic azo colour. It is made from sodium naphthionate and sodium 1-naphthol-4-sulphonate — petrochemical products — by diazotisation with hydrochloric acid and sodium nitrite, with sodium carbonate; common salt and sodium sulphate remain in the powder.
