Description

Patent Blue V is a synthetic triarylmethane dye: N,N-diethylaniline + 3-hydroxybenzaldehyde → condensation and sulphonation (sulphuric acid) → leuco form → dissolution in ammonia, oxidation with manganese dioxide in phosphoric acid → NaOH neutralisation → precipitation with HCl + NaCl or HCl + CaCl2 → drying, standardisation with sodium sulphate or chloride. The sources name no animal raw material in the synthesis.

Basis of the ruling

Patent Blue V is a synthetic triarylmethane colour. It is made from N,N-diethylaniline and 3-hydroxybenzaldehyde — petrochemical products — with sulphuric and phosphoric acids, ammonia, manganese dioxide, sodium hydroxide and hydrochloric acid; sodium chloride and sodium and calcium sulphates remain in the powder.
