Sunset Yellow FCF is a synthetic monoazo dye: sulphanilic acid → diazotisation → coupling with 6-hydroxy-2-naphthalenesulphonic acid (Schaeffer's salt) → isolation as the sodium salt, drying. Sunset Yellow FCF is a synthetic azo colour. It is made from petrochemical products — sulphanilic acid and Schaeffer's salt (6-hydroxy-2-naphthalenesulphonic acid) — by diazotisation with hydrochloric or sulphuric acid and sodium nitrite; common salt and sodium sulphate remain in the powder.
