Disposing of a sum set aside with the intention of zakat
Question
A sum was specified for zakat or ‘ushr (tithe) and set aside separately. Now, if [the owner] wishes to change it for another coin, or, if it is a small coin, wishes to keep a large one in its place — is this permissible or not? The point is that the sum which has been set aside, having been specifically designated, must surely be kept separate.
Answer
The sum of zakat or ‘ushr does not leave [the owner’s] ownership by being set aside separately; therefore, disposing of it by changing and exchanging it is permissible.
