The method of paying zakat for students

Question

I have been serving as a delegated imam in a mosque in a town and locality of India for about twelve years. By the grace of Allah my livelihood is going well. I have no personal interest; my intention is only the development and prosperity of the mosque. I am thinking of keeping a few external students who will learn religion. If a madrasa arrangement is established, some friends have promised that all the expenses for their needs will be arranged from zakat funds. Therefore these issues are being asked.

Answer

Spending zakat and similar funds to fulfill the needs of eligible students by transferring ownership to them (tamlik) is legally valid in Islamic law. By doing so the zakat is considered discharged. There is no need to resort to any legal stratagem (hila) in this matter.
