Zakat to sayyids and to students of English education

Question

May zakat be given to sayyids in this age? And what is the ruling on spending zakat money on English education?

Answer

According to the narration of Abu 'Isma from Imam Abu Hanifa ﵀, zakat is permissible for the Banu Hashim because they do not receive their share — the khums al-khums (the fifth of the fifth of the spoils) — from the bayt al-mal (public treasury) (thus in “al-Durr al-Mukhtar”, vol. 1, p. 91). Imam al-Tahawi ﵀ also adopted this view (thus in “Maraqi al-Falah”, p. 293).
