Is There Zakat on a Truck Put Out on Hire?
Question
(1) If a person owns two or three trucks and works only on this truck — that is, he is engaged solely in carrying goods, for example from Moradabad to Delhi or somewhere else — will zakat be wajib on the income of that very truck, or on the full value of the truck itself? (2) Will house rent and truck hire be reckoned in the same way, or will there be some difference? (3) How are trade goods reckoned, and in what manner should the reckoning be made and zakat paid?
Answer
(1) That truck is not for sale, so there is no zakat on it. If its income, to the amount of the nisab (equal to the value of 52½ tolas of silver; a tola is a unit of weight, ≈ 11.66 g), remains in excess of basic needs (hawa’ij asliyya) for a full year, zakat will become binding on it. (2) The ruling for both is the same — what was stated in No. 1. (3)
