Zakat Is to Be Paid on Doubtful Wealth

Question

Is it permissible to pay zakat on doubtful wealth or not? And does unlawful (haram) wealth also become pure by paying zakat?

Answer

Wealth that is doubtful, with no proof of its being unlawful, is also liable to zakat. As for haram wealth, when ownership of it is not established at all, zakat is not binding on it either.
