Zakat on Grain

Question

Zayd has two hundred maunds (a unit of weight, ≈ 37 kg) of paddy (unhusked rice). A full year (hawl) has also passed over it, but he did not have the intention of trade. Will zakat be wajib on this paddy or not? And if Zayd has other money besides this paddy, will zakat be wajib in that case as well or not?

Answer

Since that paddy is not for trade, zakat is not wajib on it, whether a year has passed over it or not. As for the money he has besides it, if it amounts to the nisab, zakat will be wajib on that money; zakat will not be wajib on the paddy even together with the money.
