Giving Zakat by Combining Gold and Silver

Question

Zayd has silver in excess of the nisab and gold of less than seven mithqals. In this case, will it be wajib to pay zakat by combining the gold with the silver, or not? Explain, and be rewarded.

Answer

The zakat on one nisab of silver should be paid separately. Then the remaining quantity in excess of one nisab should be looked at: if its value equals such an amount of gold that the nisab of gold can be completed by it, then it is wajib to treat the total as a nisab of gold and give zakat.
