Giving the Value Is Also Valid in Zakat on Silver
Question
If in the case mentioned it is not necessary to give two and a half rupees, and zakat will also be discharged by giving two and a half tolas (a unit of weight, ≈ 11.66 g) of silver, then should one give two and a half tolas of silver, or may one also give their value — that is, are both ways permissible, or only one?
Answer
When two and a half tolas of silver are wajib, there is a choice in this: one may give silver, or jewellery and the like; or one may give rupees, half-rupee and quarter-rupee coins and the like; or one may give some item — cloth and the like — worth two and a half tolas of silver. All of this is valid.
