The Ruling on Zakat When Neither the Nisab of Gold Nor That of Silver Is Complete

Question

Zayd has 33 tolas (a unit of weight, ≈ 11.66 g) of silver and 4¼ tolas of gold. Will zakat now be wajib or not? If it will, then in what way?

Answer

One should find out from the market the value of how much silver the said gold is worth; then, treating this gold as standing in place of that much silver, combine it with the 33 tolas of silver and pay one fortieth of the total in zakat according to the rules of the Sacred Law.
