The nisab of silver
Question
A person has two hundred and fifty tolas (a unit of weight, ≈ 11.66 g) of silver and one tola of gold. Now, when the rate is 8 per tola of silver and 37 rupees per tola of gold, what amount of zakat should be paid — how many rupees of zakat should be paid? Explain, and be rewarded.
Answer
In the obligation and payment of zakat it is not the sum of money that is considered but the weight. Therefore the value of one tola of gold should be ascertained from the market — what it sells for — and then, taking this one tola of gold as standing in place of so many tolas of silver, zakat, i.e. one fortieth, should be paid from the total.
