Zakat on a girl’s jewellery

Question

Is zakat wajib on the parents for jewellery that is made for the marriage of daughters, or is ordered and kept aside — for such jewellery of a girl? Or, after she reaches maturity, is [zakat] on the girl’s property wajib on her parents?

Answer

If that jewellery has been made the girl’s property, then before maturity zakat on it is not fard — neither on the girl nor on the parents; after maturity it will be fard on the girl herself. If it has not been made the girl’s property, then zakat will be fard on whoever owns it. So it is in “al-Durr al-Mukhtar”.
