Taking service from young children

Question

The author of “Bahar-e Shari‘at” (“The Spring of the Shari‘a”) has written that it is not permissible for teachers to have minor boys fetch water for them and use it.

Answer

Young children who are entrusted to a teacher receive upbringing (tarbiya) alongside their education. Therefore, giving them work of a kind through which they acquire the skill and habit of serving, and through which self-importance does not enter their nature, is permissible. It is also established that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ accepted service.
