Jumu‘a in a New Mosque and Replacing the Friday Holiday with Sunday
Question
Question: In a certain city, after a long time, a mosque has been built within the compound of a madrasa, because of which the Friday holiday has been changed to Sunday. Now the question is: which day should be adopted as the holiday so that there may be agreement in the city?
Answer
Making Sunday the holiday involves imitation (tashabbuh) of others; in a religious madrasa this must never be adopted. What need is there to establish a separate Jumu‘a in the new mosque? According to the Shari‘a, the practice of holding Jumu‘a in every mosque is disapproved of; in this lies a greater manifestation of the majesty of Islam.
