Adhan and Congregational Prayer in a Madrasa

Question

There is an Islamic madrasa named Siraj al-‘Ulum, in Kakrauli. The Ahl al-Sunna wa al-Jama‘a have three mosques. In short, prayer is performed in the said madrasa with adhan and congregation. The students and the teacher pray in congregation, since the mosques of the town are some distance away. We ask you for a fatwa: may adhan and congregation be held in the said madrasa or not? The people of the neighbourhood also come here and pray.

Answer

A mosque is not a condition for adhan and congregation. Apart from a mosque, it is valid everywhere: in the open country, in a house, at a station, in a madrasa. However, the merit of the mosque is attained only by praying in the mosque itself. Abandoning the mosques altogether and permanently holding adhan and congregation in the madrasa is not appropriate.
