The effects of government aid on a religious madrasa
Question
In the town of Maghar, “Madaris Mazhabi Ta‘lim” (madrasas of religious education) have been running since 1914, which receive monthly aid from the District Board. In them, the Holy Qur’an is taught daily for an hour and a half in the first part of the day, and on the remaining days (Monday, Thursday) the kalima, du‘a’ al-qunut, Ayat al-Kursi and the funeral du‘a’. In the rest of the time Urdu is taught.
Answer
Formerly, in the elementary school only the Holy Qur’an and religious rulings were taught; it was a purely religious madrasa. Then the children who completed it would go to a madrasa to study Arabic and Persian; there some arithmetic was also taught as far as needed. That too was a purely religious madrasa. Then the lure of aid from the Board was offered.
