Educating the children of the well-off with donations
Question
In a certain madrasa, two to four children from outside are admitted, and on that basis donations are collected from the whole area; under cover of these poor children, the children of well-off people also study, and the parents of the well-off children give at most two to four rupees in a whole year. The teacher’s salary is fifty rupees, and there are also one or two fundraisers, so that the yearly salary of these persons comes to one thousand eight hundred rupees, while fifty to sixty students study there.
Answer
The basic principle is that every person is required to arrange religious education for his children. But when Muslims no longer have this awareness, or they are compelled and unable, then arrangements will inevitably be made through donations. Those who teach will take salaries from the donated money in order to meet the obligatory (wajib) maintenance expenses (nafaqa)
