Women Coming and Going through the Mosque for Teaching
Question
In Bhopal there is a mosque known as the Moti Masjid; its layout is roughly like that of the Congregational Mosque of Delhi. It has galleries on three sides; for some years a madrasa has been running in the eastern gallery, in which Arabic, Persian, Urdu, Hindi and English are taught. What is more, those receiving instruction are minor girls, and those teaching them are also more or less young women, who enter and leave the mosque in every condition. Is this correct according to the Shari‘a?
Answer
Passing through the mosque in a state of ritual impurity is not correct: [ar]وَلَا تَدْخُلُ الْمَسْجِدَ، وَكَذَا الْجُنُبُ؛ لِقَوْلِهِ عَلَيْهِ الصَّلَاةُ وَالسَّلَامُ: فَإِنِّي لَا أُحِلُّ الْمَسْجِدَ لِحَائِضٍ وَلَا جُنُبٍ[/ar] “And she does not enter the mosque, and likewise the junub (one in major ritual impurity)
