Whoever Uses the Mosque’s Goods and Premises Must Pay Rent
Question
Who has the right to use the mosque’s premises, its doors and walls? Among the imam of the mosque, the muezzin and the mutawalli (trustee), who has the greater right — for example, regarding the ladder and other things? What are the rights of the imam, the muezzin and the mutawalli?
Answer
No one is permitted to use the mosque’s premises; whoever uses them should pay compensation. If a house or room is given to the imam or the muezzin, it should be given as part of the remuneration for service, that is, an agreement should be made with him: “You will receive such-and-such a salary and will get a room to live in.
