Selling the Fruit of a Mosque’s Trees

Question

On the land around the mosque that is endowed for the mosque (mawqufa ʿala al-masjid), may fruit trees be planted with the purpose that the people of the neighbourhood will eat the fruit, or that it will be sold and applied to some need of the mosque? Are both of the stated cases permissible or not?

Answer

If the endowed land of the mosque can be given for cultivation or on rent, then it should be cultivated or rented out and its income spent on the needs of the mosque; otherwise trees should be planted on it, and the fruit sold and the proceeds spent on the mosque.
