He bought a goat for sacrifice and it fell ill: what should he do now?

Question

(1) A certain man has a goat for sacrifice, and this is the month of Dhu al-Qa‘da. The goat has fallen ill and there seems to be no chance of it surviving. The owner of the nisab intends to slaughter this sick goat and, putting whatever price he receives together with an additional sum from his own pocket, buy another goat and sacrifice it. What is the ruling for the owner of the nisab in this case? (2) A certain man says: if a goat for whose sacrifice a vow (nadhr)

Answer

(1) The view of this goat’s owner is quite appropriate. (2) If the vow of sacrifice was made specifying this particular goat, and it came near to death before the time of sacrifice arrived, it should be slaughtered and given away as sadaqa; in sha’ Allah, the vow will be accepted.
