The sacrificial animal fell ill
Question
Zayd bought a goat with the intention of sacrifice. Zayd owns the nisab, but after a few days the goat fell ill. He sold this goat, having slaughtered it. Should Zayd now buy another goat with the money from the goat’s price, or may he spend that money on his own needs and buy another goat from his own funds?
Answer
Zayd is obliged to sacrifice another goat (whether he buys it with that money or with other money), provided that the goat bought earlier has developed such an illness, or some other such defect has occurred, that its sacrifice is no longer valid.
