Explanation of the word jadhaʿa
Question
Question: In the Arabic language the well-known meaning of the word jadhaʿa (جذعة) is a one-year-old young goat. Thus the respected Mawlana Gangohi ﵀ says: [ar]قال أهل اللغة وغيرهم: الجذع التي تمت لها سنة ركوب[/ar] “The lexicographers and others said: the jadhaʿ is the one that has completed a year, rukub (?).” And the respected Mawlana Khalil Ahmad, the muhaddith of Saharanpur ﵀, wrote: [ar]الجذع في اللغة ما تمت له سنة[/ar] “The jadhaʿ in the language is that which has completed a year” (Badhl al-Majhud, vol.
Answer
Just as the science of hadith is an independent discipline with its own particular technical terms, which need not be used in their lexical meanings — rather, they are transferred (manqul) — such as muʿdal, shadhdh, munkar, gharib, muhaddith, hafiz, hujja, hakim, sahih, hasan, gharib, etc.; if they are taken in their lexical meanings, the sense will become confused.
