Which sacrifice brings greater reward: on one’s own behalf, on behalf of one’s mother, or on behalf of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ
Question
Question: The sacrifice is not fard upon Zayd. Some time ago it was fard upon his mother Hinda, since Hinda owned the nisab; not knowing the ruling, she did not perform the sacrifice. Should Zayd now perform the sacrifice on his own behalf, on behalf of his mother, or on behalf of the Noble Messenger ﷺ? In which is the greater reward?
Answer
If Zayd owns the nisab, then it is wajib for him to perform the sacrifice on his own behalf, and there is no leeway to omit it. For as many years as his mother did not perform the sacrifice although it was wajib upon her, it is wajib to give the sacrifice as sadaqa for that many years.
