Hazrat ‘Umar’s Marriage to the Prophet’s ﷺ Granddaughter
Question
A certain scholar stated in his lecture that Bibi Fatima’s ﵂ second daughter, Umm Kulthum, was married to Hazrat ‘Umar ﵁, who was a father-in-law of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ [through his own daughter, Hafsa]. How, then, could his marriage be with his own granddaughter [i.e., the Prophet’s ﷺ granddaughter]? What is the ruling on this?
Answer
This is correct and is recorded in the books of fiqh and hadith: [ar]قَالَ عُمَرُ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ: فَتَزَوَّجْتُ أُمَّ كُلْثُومٍ بِنْتَ عَلِيٍّ لِذَلِكَ[/ar] “Hazrat ‘Umar ﵁ said: ‘And I married Umm Kulthum bint ‘Ali for this reason’” (“Shami, Karachi ed.,” p. 198, vol. 2, chapter “Every tie of relationship by cause and by blood is severed,” Kitab al-Jana’iz).
