The Wives and Mothers of the Four Rightly-Guided Caliphs

Question

(1) The mushrika wife of Hazrat Abu Bakr ﵁ was named Qutayla, but the name of his new wife is not given in the fifth volume of “Mazahir-i Haqq” (“Manifestations of the Truth”): in one place it is written “Umm Ruman” and in another “Asma bint Umays”. Which name is correct? (2) What was the name of the mushrika wife of Hazrat ‘Umar al-Faruq ﵁, and what was the name of the wife he married after accepting Islam? What was the name of Hazrat ‘Umar’s mother — did she accept Islam? Did her father accept Islam?

Answer

(1) Asma bint Umays married three times: her first marriage was to Hazrat Ja‘far ibn Abi Talib ﵁, with whom she migrated to Abyssinia; she bore him Muhammad, ‘Abdullah, and ‘Awn. Her second marriage was to Hazrat Abu Bakr al-Siddiq ﵁, who fathered Muhammad. Her third marriage was to Hazrat ‘Ali ﵁, who fathered Hazrat Yahya ﵀ (“al-Ikmal,” p. 587).
