Did the Prophet Ride a Donkey?
Question
Did the wet-nurse Halima al-Sa‘diyya take the noble Prophet ﷺ with her, in order to nurse him, on a donkey, or on a she-camel, or on a mule? Some people say she took him on a donkey. Kindly shed full light on the truth of the matter — which mount she took him on — with a reference to a book. Did he ﷺ ever ride a donkey or not? If he ﷺ did ride a donkey, on what occasion did he do so?
Answer
Riding a donkey was no disgrace among the Arabs; men of high standing rode them too. At al-Azhar the shaykh’s stipend included an allowance for his donkey as well, on which he would come from home. Halima al-Sa‘diyya, too, rode a donkey and took the noble Prophet ﷺ with her upon it; this is explicitly stated in the books of the blessed Sira: [ar]قَالَتْ (حَلِيمَةُ)
