The Words “I Gave You Jawab, Gave Jawab, Gave Jawab”: Which Talaq Occurs?

Question: Zayd, in a state of anger, said to his wife: «میں نے تجھ کو جواب دیا جواب دیا جواب دیا» (“I gave you jawab, gave jawab, gave jawab” — “jawab” literally means “answer”; colloquially, “dismissal”); he said this word three or four times. Have three talaqs occurred by this? Or which talaq will it be?

Answer

Answer — Ahmad ‘Ali Sa‘id, Dar al-‘Ulum Deoband In the case asked about, one irrevocable (ba‘in) talaq has taken effect on his wife. If the wife consents, remarriage is valid.
