The Amount of Water for Ghusl and Istinja’

Question

How much water is it necessary to have for the obligatory ghusl? And how much water is it necessary to have for istinja’? If one performs istinja’ with only three clods of earth and prays without washing with water, will the prayer be valid?

Answer

Whatever the person is — small or large, stout or thin — water will be needed according to his size; there is no binding limitation to one quantity for everyone. If the impurity around the place of exit (makhraj) has not reached the amount of one dirham, and one has sufficed with clods alone, the prayer will still be valid.
