Slaughtering from the side of the neck
Question
Question: Zayd hunted a deer and, for a practical reason, instead of slaughtering it near the throat, slaughtered it at the last part of the neck, which is towards the chest and the forelegs; and all the conditions of slaughter were duly fulfilled. Is that animal lawful according to the Sharia or unlawful?
Answer
The vessels of slaughter are four: the trachea (hulqum), the oesophagus (mari’) and the two jugular veins (wadajan). If by slaughtering in this way all four vessels have been cut, the slaughter is valid, as is known from al-Jamiʿ al-Saghir, al-Fatawa al-Bazzaziyya, Shami and others.
