A village mu'takif going to town for the Friday prayer

Question

In a village where the conditions for the Friday prayer (Jumu'a) are not met, is i'tikaf in the last ten days an emphasized sunna on a communal basis ('ala al-kifaya) or not? If it is, may the mu'takif go to the small town where the Friday prayer is held and pray the Friday prayer there, or not? Will the emphasized-sunna i'tikaf not be lost thereby?

Answer

For i'tikaf it is not necessary that there be a town or that the conditions of the Friday prayer be met; rather, it is a sunna on a communal basis everywhere, whether in a town or a village. However, the mosque must be one in which the congregational prayer (jama'a) is held.
