Making up a broken i'tikaf of the last ten days; make-up and current i'tikaf together

Question

Zayd performed the i'tikaf of the last ten days in blessed Ramadan. After three days of i'tikaf, news suddenly came that he had to set off on the journey for Hajj to the House of Allah, because of which he was compelled to break the i'tikaf and leave. Is a make-up (qada) of this ten-day period now binding or not? And what will be the form of the make-up? And if this year, in the last ten days of Ramadan, he wishes to merge the make-up (qada) and the timely performance (ada), can he do so or not?

Answer

The most cautious course, admittedly, is that after Ramadan he performs i'tikaf for a full ten days and also fasts on the days of those ten, but this ruling is not obligatory (wajib): a make-up (qada) of the day on which the sunna i'tikaf was broken is also sufficient.
