Voluntary i'tikaf is in the mosque, not at home
Question
Is there also a voluntary i'tikaf? If a man goes into the mosque and makes the intention, “As long as I remain in the mosque, I am in i'tikaf,” will he receive the reward of voluntary i'tikaf? Can voluntary i'tikaf also be done at home?
Answer
By making such an intention in the mosque, he will receive the reward of voluntary i'tikaf. A man will not receive the reward in this way at home.
